Sacred Drumming in Nature: My New Drum!

by Apr 2, 2021

Drumming in nature is a special medicine. Sacred Drumming as practised by people throughout the world, transcends culture and custom.  People have drummed on objects since the beginning of humanity I’m sure, as it’s such a natural thing to do.

We first hear the drumming of our mothers heartbeat whilst in the womb and it soothes us. It is ever present, that “lub-dub” sound of her heart valves closing. Once we are born we experience new rhythms, feeding rhythms, sleeping rhythms but our mother’s heartbeat is usually close by.

As we grow and mature, the rhythms of the seasons and the turning of the wheel take over as we flow through the changing energies of each year. The more we can tune in to these rhythms of nature, our bodies, the moon and the weather, the more in flow and coherence we will be. Our hearts are always there for us and we can learn to come back to our hearts, tuning into that heartbeat once more.

Now I drum with my Sacred Drum, in the woods, in the garden, on the beach and around the fire. It brings me great joy, as I communicate with all of creation. The animals appear and come closer, the wind and the sun show their power, Grandmother Earth holds me and I feel at peace in the centre of my Medicine Wheel. My drum frame is made of Birch and Deerskin and when I made it I was honouring the tree and its qualities, and of course the deer whose energy lives on through my drum.

The Birch tree energy instills good spirits, harmony and peace and helps one deepen intuition.  The beautiful deer brings gentleness, compassion, snsitiivity and unconditional love. I think all of those qualities are exactly what is needed at this challenging time in history!

The process of birthing a drum is a magical and empowering process. I have made three drums now and the first one had me in tears! It was such a struggle. The second one was a smoother experience and this time it was easier still but still strenuous!

This drum is a two-sided drum which feels very different to the one-sided one. The two sides have a different character, a masculine and a feminine, which feels really appropriate at this time as we balance those energies in our lives and in our energy fields.

I look forward to sharing more about this relationship with my new drum as we get to know eachother.

With thanks to Eva Bay Greenslade  for her guidance during this drum birthing.
