Sacred Drumming in Nature: My New Drum!
Drumming in nature is a special medicine. Sacred Drumming as practised by people throughout the world, transcends culture and custom. People have drummed on objects since the beginning of humanity I’m sure, as it’s such a natural thing to do.
We first hear the drumming of our mothers heartbeat whilst in the womb and it soothes us. It is ever present, that “lub-dub” sound of her heart valves closing. Once we are born we experience new rhythms, feeding rhythms, sleeping rhythms but our mother’s heartbeat is usually close by.
As we grow and mature, the rhythms of the seasons and the turning of the wheel take over as we flow through the changing energies of each year. The more we can tune in to these rhythms of nature, our bodies, the moon and the weather, the more in flow and coherence we will be. Our hearts are always there for us and we can learn to come back to our hearts, tuning into that heartbeat once more.
Now I drum with my Sacred Drum, in the woods, in the garden, on the beach and around the fire. It brings me great joy, as I communicate with all of creation. The animals appear and come closer, the wind and the sun show their power, Grandmother Earth holds me and I feel at peace in the centre of my Medicine Wheel. My drum frame is made of Birch and Deerskin and when I made it I was honouring the tree and its qualities, and of course the deer whose energy lives on through my drum.
The Birch tree energy instills good spirits, harmony and peace and helps one deepen intuition. The beautiful deer brings gentleness, compassion, snsitiivity and unconditional love. I think all of those qualities are exactly what is needed at this challenging time in history!
The process of birthing a drum is a magical and empowering process. I have made three drums now and the first one had me in tears! It was such a struggle. The second one was a smoother experience and this time it was easier still but still strenuous!
This drum is a two-sided drum which feels very different to the one-sided one. The two sides have a different character, a masculine and a feminine, which feels really appropriate at this time as we balance those energies in our lives and in our energy fields.
I look forward to sharing more about this relationship with my new drum as we get to know eachother.
With thanks to Eva Bay Greenslade for her guidance during this drum birthing.
The sound just illuminates with me. I am drawn to it and can create to it. And, when one is in front of you – can you not touch it. I am always tempted to tap it, connect with it and listen. So powerful to me.
Ah yes Drumming, I don’t get it, but I do get that it works for holistic practices, how is that for irony! My crystal healer has used the drum in my sessions, and especially for our womb healing sessions, its weird, I just don’t understand it, but just because I don’t understand doesn’t mean I stop it from being part of the session. If it works, who am I to question it.
I think the power of drumming healing is beyond our understanding really Donna as a good practitioner will be acting as a hollow vessel for the energies to flow through and it isn’t really something that can be understood cerebrally. Thanks for reading. 🙂
” that “lub-dub” sound of her heart valves closing” while we are in a place of opening to the world. So powerful.
I think that heartbeat is so crucial..and so then we can use that slow beat to calm and soothe ourselves when we need to. 🙂
Oh what a beautiful drum ! I used to be part of a drumming circle and I loved it. You’ve just made me realise how healing it was! Thanks:)
Thankyou Cheryl! I love drumming in circle, the energies are so amplified and we have so much to learn from oneanother.
Loved this post, and Drumming outside in the natural world is something I feel drawn to. I was recently camped in Padre Island on the gulf coast and a nearby camper would come out and drum every night as the sun was setting. It was very powerful and moving. I am following you on Facebook.
Thank you Joyce. Very grateful for you reading and commenting. 🙂
I love being in a circle with drummers around a fire and have really missed that part of my yearly pilgrimage to the festivals I attend. I’d love to make my own drum, too!
I love this! You can’t not feel the magic when the drums beat.
I totally agree Nicole!
